I pay for my parents' health insurance. Can I claim it?
Yes, up to ₹25,000, or ₹50,000 if either parent is 60 or older. This is on top of your own family's limit.
My father is 70 and has no insurance. Can I claim his hospital bills?
Yes. Medical bills for a senior citizen with no health insurance count, up to ₹50,000.

Common questions
How much can I claim under 80D?
Up to ₹25,000 for you, your spouse and children (₹50,000 if you or your spouse are 60 or older), plus up to ₹25,000 for your parents (₹50,000 if either is 60 or older). The most anyone can claim is ₹1 lakh.
Does a preventive health check-up count?
Yes, up to ₹5,000 a year in total for your family and parents, within the limits above. It's the only part you can pay in cash.
Can I claim medical bills without insurance?
Only for a senior citizen (60 or older) who has no health insurance. Their medical bills count, within the ₹50,000 limit.
Can I claim 80D under the new regime?
No. The new regime doesn't allow 80D. It only helps if you choose the old regime.
Can I claim the premium my employer pays?
No. A group policy paid by your employer doesn't count. A top-up you pay for yourself does.
I paid a 3-year premium in one go. How much can I claim?
One-third each year, for the three years of cover, within the yearly limit.
