Questions people often ask
My EPF already covers ₹90,000. What should I add?
Check whether the old regime saves you more first. If it does, PPF, ELSS or NPS can fill the rest, depending on how soon you need the money.
Does my home loan principal count?
Yes, under 80C. The interest is separate: up to ₹2 lakh under section 24 for a home you live in.
What counts towards 80C
Up to ₹1.5 lakh in total, old regime only.
| Already paying | Can invest |

Common questions
What is the 80C limit?
₹1.5 lakh a year in total, under the old regime. On top of that, your own NPS contribution can get up to ₹50,000 more under section 80CCD(1B).
What counts towards 80C?
Your EPF contribution, PPF, ELSS mutual funds, life insurance premiums, home loan principal, children's tuition fees, Sukanya Samriddhi, NSC, 5-year tax-saver FDs, and stamp duty and registration on a new home, among others.
Does 80C apply under the new regime?
No. The new regime doesn't allow 80C. Only employer NPS contributions get a deduction there.
Is EPF part of 80C?
Yes. Your own 12% EPF contribution counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh. Many salaried people use up most of the limit through EPF alone.
How much tax does 80C save?
Up to ₹46,800 a year if you're in the 30% slab (₹1.5 lakh × 30% plus 4% cess). In the 20% slab, about ₹31,200.
Can I claim tuition fees for three children?
No. Tuition fees count for up to two children, and only the tuition part, not transport or development fees.
