Questions people often ask
Why is my in-hand so much lower than my CTC?
Your CTC includes your employer's PF and gratuity, which you don't get monthly. Then your own PF, professional tax and income tax come off.
Should I ask HR to add NPS to my salary?
Often, yes. Employer NPS up to 14% of basic is deductible under the new regime, within the overall ₹7.5 lakh yearly limit on employer PF, NPS and superannuation.
From CTC to take-home
Your CTC is what your employer spends on you in a year. Not all of it reaches your bank.
| Part of CTC | What happens to it |
|---|---|
| Basic, HRA, allowances | Paid monthly |
| Bonus or variable pay | Paid once or twice a year |
| Employer PF (12% of basic) | Goes to your PF account |
| Gratuity (4.81% of basic) | Paid when you leave after 5 years |
Then, from your monthly salary
- Your PF: 12% of basic, saved in your PF account.
- Professional tax: up to ₹2,500 a year, depending on your state.
- Income tax (TDS): spread evenly over the year.

Common questions
How is in-hand salary calculated from CTC?
Start with your CTC. Take out your employer's PF and the gratuity provision, which you don't get monthly. From the salary that's left, take out your own PF, professional tax and income tax. Divide by 12.
What is the in-hand salary for ₹18 lakh CTC?
About ₹1.18 lakh a month in FY 2026-27, with basic at 50% of CTC, PF on full basic, gratuity in the CTC and no deductions, under the new regime. It changes with your salary structure.
Why is PF taken out twice?
Your employer's 12% is part of your CTC but goes straight to your PF account. Your own 12% is deducted from your salary. Both are your money, saved for later.
Is gratuity part of my CTC?
Many companies include it, at about 4.81% of basic. You only get it if you leave after 5 years of service, so it isn't part of your monthly pay.
How does the new labour code affect my in-hand salary?
The codes require wages (mainly basic + DA) to be at least half of total pay, so many employers have raised basic. A higher basic means higher PF and gratuity, so take-home can fall a little even though your savings rise.
Which regime should I choose for my salary?
The calculator picks the one with lower tax. The old regime wins only if your HRA, 80C, 80D and other deductions are large. Tell HR at the start of the year. If you have no business income, you can still choose either regime when you file by the due date.
Is professional tax the same everywhere?
No. Each state sets its own, up to ₹2,500 a year. Most large states charge about ₹200 a month, while Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh don't charge it.
