Common questions
How is FD interest calculated?
Most banks compound interest every quarter. Maturity = deposit × (1 + rate ÷ 4) to the power of the number of quarters.
How much will ₹5 lakh grow to at 7% for 3 years?
About ₹6,15,720, with about ₹1.16 lakh of interest.
When does the bank deduct TDS on FD interest?
Banks deduct 10% TDS (with your PAN) when the interest they pay or credit to you in a financial year is over ₹50,000, or ₹1 lakh if you're 60 or older. Interest from all your deposits with that bank is added together.
Is FD interest tax-free under any section?
Senior citizens can claim up to ₹50,000 of bank and post office interest under 80TTB in the old regime. A 5-year tax-saver FD's deposit counts for 80C, but its interest is taxable.
Reinvested or quarterly payout?
Reinvested (cumulative) grows faster because interest earns interest. Quarterly payout suits regular income.
