Are listed bond gains long-term?
Listed bonds held over 12 months: 12.5% without indexation. Unlisted bonds and debentures are taxed at your slab rate.
What yield to maturity means

Common questions
What is yield to maturity?
The yearly return you'd earn if you bought at today's price, held to maturity and every payment was made on time.
What is current yield?
The yearly coupon ÷ the price you pay. It ignores the gain or loss at maturity.
Why does a bond below face value yield more than its coupon?
You also gain the difference between the price and the face value when it matures.
What is the yield on a bond bought at face value?
The same as its coupon rate.
How is YTM quoted in India?
As a yearly rate: the half-yearly rate × 2, for bonds that pay twice a year.
