Do freelancers need GST registration?
Generally once turnover from services crosses ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in some states), or for certain supplies regardless of turnover.
Is freelance income taxed with salary?
Yes, as business or professional income in the same return, often with presumptive tax under 44ADA.

Common questions
How do I add GST to a price?
GST = price × rate. Price with GST = price + GST. At 18%, ₹10,000 becomes ₹11,800.
How do I remove GST from a price?
Price before GST = price ÷ (1 + rate). ₹11,800 including 18% is ₹10,000 plus ₹1,800 GST.
What are the GST rates now?
From 22 September 2025 the main rates are 5% and 18%, with 40% for specified luxury and harmful goods. The 12% slab was removed; special rates apply to gold (3%) and diamonds.
What are CGST, SGST and IGST?
Within a state, GST is split equally between the centre (CGST) and the state (SGST). Between states, it's charged as IGST.
Does 28% still apply?
Only to a few items such as tobacco and pan masala, for now.
